Myra Daleng

Myra was the director of dance at the University of Richmond for 28 years. Upon retiring in May, 2013 she was named Director of Dance Emerita. As the director of dance, her position included teaching classes in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, choreography, dance history and kinetics. As the Artistic Director and founder of the University Dancers, the student performing ensemble, she created numerous pieces of choreography and served as the rehearsal director for renown choreographers such as Robert Battle, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Frank Chaves, Artistic Director of River North Chicago, Jessica Lang, Doug Varone and many others. She holds a bachelor of arts in dance from the University of Maryland and a master's of science in dance from James Madison University. Ms. Daleng also choreographed numerous musicals for the University of Richmond's theatre productions. Ms. Daleng received a University of Richmond Distinguished Educator Award in 2010 and in 2011 she was the recipient of the Theresa Pollak Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the arts. Prior to the University of Richmond, Ms. Daleng was the artistic director and proprietor of Richmond Dance Center for 12 years. Ms. Daleng performed as a principal dancer with the Richmond Ballet (1976-79), was a principal dancer and artistic director of Ballet Contemporary (1978-79), the modern company of the Richmond Ballet and co-founded and performed with the Virginia Dance Company (1980-83). Ms. Daleng performed in musicals for the Barn Dinner Theatre and Theatre IV and taught dance for the Virginia Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts for nine years, hosted by the University of Richmond. Upon retiring from the University of Richmond, Ms. Daleng trained and certified in BeMoved®, a dance fitness experience for adults of all ages, skill levels and movement abilities. Myra teaches classical ballet and BeMoved dance fitness at the Latin Ballet.
