The Genworth Lights Up! Youth Series is making its final stop of the season at Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts! This FREE event will offer more than 20 interactive workshops and performances for youth of all ages!

Final performance of our school year.  A performing arts interpretation of the magical novel 'MILAGROS, Girl from Away' written by Meg Medina, based on the story of a young girl who uncovers the true meaning of family, the significance of identity, and, most important, the power of a mother’s love. The piece will be performed by the school of the Latin Ballet, the Junior Company and Faculty. 


We are honored to partner with Meg Medina, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Newbery Medalist, and author of books for kids of all ages, to bring this book of magical realism to the stage. We are thrilled to announce she will be present at this performance hosting a Q & A session and book signing after the show!

Macondo (excerpts)

Representing the culture of Colombia at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), the Latin Ballet of Virginia will present excerpts from the full production of Macondo, A performing arts interpretation based on the novel “Cien Años de Soledad” (One Hundred Years of Solitude)

Written by: Hispanic Literature Nobel Prize Winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, creator of magical realism in Hispanic literature.

Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Date and Time: September 9th, 2 performances and activities representing the culture of Colombia between 11 AM and 3 PM

AGUAS is a family-oriented dance-theater production celebrating history, culture and the James River natural treasures. AGUAS honors the commemoration of the end of the war and the freedom of all enslaved African American people. The performance was inspired by John Bryan’s 2023 book, "The James River in Richmond," that not only celebrates the history and beauty of the James River in Richmond, Virginia, but also provides a guide to its recreational opportunities.

· 1-2 pm: Lecture Presentation Alma Latina:  is based on the production of ALMA LATINA: represents the culture, traditions and roots of the Latino American people.

The program includes the demonstration of the Native, African and Spanish influences to the culture of the Caribbean and Latino America

FLAMENCO 

Learn different Palos (rhythms) of Flamenco, such as Alegrias, Tangos, and Fandangos. Cultural information and the origins of each dance form will be included in the instruction.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, LBV will be part of the opening of the Latin Business Expo 2023. Join us in our performance Alma Latina, representing the culture, traditions, and roots of the Latino-American people. The program includes the Native, African and Spanish influences to the culture of the Caribbean and Latino America.

Alma Latina is a family-oriented dance-theater production celebrating the history that influenced the rhythm, music and dance of Latin America. Through salsa, mambo, tango, flamenco and reggae, the unique, powerful and passionate artists of the Latin Ballet of Virginia will weave tradition, culture and politics into a tapestry of understanding for the soul (Alma), the people and the history of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of one of the most traditional Mexican festivities. This Aztec ritual and commemoration started at least 3,000 years ago. It is a festive interaction that embraces the cycle of life. Mesoamerican natives, African-Americans and Spanish blend their traditions during the celebration.
